Over the course of Tommy Harrison’s exhibition, Pipeline presents a work by Emmanuel Awuni, the artist who's exhibition is next in the program. Awuni views Nobody Loves the Head of a Dandelion (2022) as a pivotal piece in which the two essential parts of his practice—painting and sculpture—meet. Working across different mediums is important to Awuni, who considers how to overcome physical distinctions in order to retain a core narrative throughout his work. In this piece, a spray-painted, magenta face appears behind the bars of a trestle table. A finger seems to press to the temple of a suspended ceramic head in a “lightbulb”, breakthrough moment. It depicts the meeting of two minds, the painted head represents Awuni’s painting practice and the ceramic head represents his sculptural one. There is a tenderness between them, an acceptance that two dimensional and three dimensional forms of expression for the artist have become one.
Nobody loves the Head of a Dandelion was featured in Awuni’s solo exhibition Lamps at Sundy gallery, London (2022). His upcoming exhibition at Pipeline will take place November 17 – December 17, 2022, alongside his duo exhibition with Emmanuel Massi at PM/AM gallery, 37 Eastcastle Street.
