Matilda Sutton

Working between painting, drawing, textile and object, Matilda Sutton weaves together narrative through image and object. Rooted in both archetypal, cultural narratives, personal experience and embodiment, Sutton’s imagery features beings somewhere between humanness and animalness. These images of fraught solitude and complex intimacy through means of story and object, attempt to express the tensions between individuality and connectedness, dependence and independence.

Matilda Sutton (b.1994) is based in Newcastle upon Tyne and graduated from Newcastle University in 2019. She participated in The NewBridge Project Collective Studio programme 2020-21. Solo exhibitions include: Dead Dog Gallery, Durham (2026); Pipeline, London, UK (2024); Vane, Gateshead, UK (2023) and Clifford Chance, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (2023). Sutton has had solo booths at Untitled, Miami with Pipeline (2025); and British Art Fair with Vane (2023).
